How To Use a Small Singing Bowl

A small Silent Mind singing bowl sits atop a red cushion with its striker nearby.

Silent Mind offers larger singing bowls and even custom singing bowls, but our four-inch diameter signature bowls are the biggest bestsellers. For a good reason!

There are plenty of perks to staying small. You can use a small singing bowl the way you would any other singing bowl, except it’s more convenient. Read on to learn why you should choose a smaller singing bowl for your collection.

Small, medium, and large singing bowls - does it matter?

We’ve addressed this question before, but it’s always worth revisiting. Here are the basics.

If you’re collecting singing bowls, having a range of sizes adds dimension and depth to any sound healing gatherings or sound baths you host. Even if you’re playing alone, having bowls of all sizes in your collection lets you experiment with what resonates best during unique circumstances.

For example, you may find that a larger bowl is a good fit for you on days where you want to feel more grounded. If you’re on the move a lot or like a more shimmery sound, a small bowl is the way to go.

The main misconception about small bowls is that they are less powerful or effective. This is not true. Small singing bowls aren’t necessarily quieter or weaker than any other size.

Why should I choose a small singing bowl?

This is one of our favorite questions. Silent Mind’s small singing bowls are among our most popular for these reasons:

They are easier for anyone to play.

Many of our customers are parents and teachers. They love sharing the sound of singing bowls at home or in the classroom. Of course, kids like to play instruments, too. A small bowl is perfect for smaller arms and hands, which may struggle to master playing a larger rim with a bigger mallet.

The same goes for many adults, too. It requires less strength and coordination to master the basic principles of playing a singing bowl when you choose a smaller size. Once you test your skill and technique on a bowl that’s easier to play, sizing up is simple - if you even want to.

They are perfect for beginners in every way.

Don’t get us wrong - plenty of experienced players still prefer smaller bowls. A small singing bowl is not a “beginner” tool in and of itself.

But consider that many smaller bowls require fewer materials and less labor, which can naturally mean they are more affordable. Of course, it depends on the materials used, and the age of the bowl - antiques will always be more expensive, regardless of size.

In general, a smaller investment means more people are likely to pick up these tools. And that’s great news for a planet that could benefit from more peace, calm, and nonjudgmental awareness.

They can go anywhere.

Think of all the amazing things you can do with a singing bowl, such as ceremonially close a yoga practice or cleanse the energy in your home. Cleansing a home with the vibrations of a singing bowl sounds pretty involved - unless the singing bowl fits neatly in your palm.

From the far reaches of your home to the office to the yoga mat, Silent Mind’s smaller singing bowls are easy to bring along. An uncomplicated mindfulness practice is one you’re more likely to stick with.
